American Savings Foundation (ASF) and the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain (CFGNB), in partnership with Pro Bono Partnership, brought local nonprofit leaders together for a timely and practical workshop on staying strong and effective in uncertain times. Speakers Sara Taylor, a Senior Staff Attorney at Pro Bono Partnership, and Jen Fournier, Owner & Principal Consultant at Racebrook Consulting guided the conversation, digging into real challenges organizations are facing—from shifting funding streams to changing regulations—and ways to navigate them with confidence.
The workshop zeroed in on what nonprofits need to do every day to stay on solid ground. Participants explored how to keep their organizations running smoothly by following key internal policies, meeting legal requirements, maintaining strong records, and staying on top of compliance concerns such as required state and tax filings.
The discussion stressed the importance of strong financial management. Attendees talked through ways to keep a close eye on budgets, monitor income and expenses, and plan ahead for potential funding changes. The session highlighted ways nonprofits can spot early signs of financial strain - and steps leaders can take to stay on track.
The workshop also tackled the realities of day-to-day operations, including staffing and internal policies. Presenters emphasized the importance of clear communication, consistent practices, and thoughtful planning for potential organizational changes.
Looking ahead, the session encouraged nonprofits to think strategically about the future. Participants considered potential risks and explored how external shifts could impact their work. They also discussed when new forms of strategic collaboration, such as mergers, consolidation, and shared sevice agreements, can leverage organizational strenghs and sustain long-term impact.
