New Britain, CT – Scholarships can make a huge difference in making college or career training more affordable. The American Savings Foundation Scholarship Program helps hundreds of local students achieve their dreams of a higher education each year. This renewable scholarship can be used at a wide range of 4-year colleges and universities, 2-year colleges, and at technical and vocational programs.
Recognizing the unique impact that the Covid pandemic had on this year’s senior class, especially during their freshman and sophomore years, the Foundation’s board of directors has waived the minimum required GPA to apply for the 2024-2025 academic year. Applicants must be a resident of one of the 64 towns in the Foundation’s service area, be eligible for federal financial aid or have DACA status, and may not already hold a bachelor’s degree.
“Waiving the GPA minimum is not a compromise on excellence,” said Heather Hokunson, Senior Program Officer for Scholarships at the Foundation. “Instead, we recognize that the excellence that makes an American Savings Foundation Scholar comes in many forms. While grades are still very important, they are not the only indication that a student has the drive, commitment, and desire to achieve their dreams though college or career training. We want to learn about each applicant and their unique dreams, and we are working hard to reduce barriers that might keep a truly amazing potential scholar from applying.”
Students are encouraged to apply online at www.asfdn.org, and applications are due by March 31, 2023. The website also has links to other area scholarship programs and resources for learning about financial aid.
“Because this scholarship is renewable, most of our scholars receive support throughout their entire college or career journey,” said Hokunson. “This year we expect to award over 100 new awards and are excited to see the potential of our new class of Scholars!”
Throughout its history, the Foundation has provided over $15 million to 2,940 students through its scholarship program. The American Savings Foundation is a permanent charitable endowment that also awards grants to area nonprofit organizations.
The Foundation accepts scholarship applications from residents of any of the following 64 Connecticut towns: Andover, Ashford, Avon, Barkhamsted, Beacon Falls, Berlin, Bethlehem, Bloomfield, Bolton, Bristol, Burlington, Canton, Chaplin, Chester, Clinton, Colebrook, Columbia, Coventry, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Granby, East Hampton, East Hartford, Essex, Farmington, Glastonbury, Granby, Haddam, Hebron, Killingworth, Madison, Manchester, Mansfield, Marlborough, Meriden, Middlebury, Middletown, Naugatuck, New Britain, Newington, Old Saybrook, Oxford, Plainville, Portland, Prospect, Rocky Hill, Seymour, Simsbury, Southbury, Southington, Thomaston, Tolland, Torrington, Waterbury, Watertown, West Hartford, Westbrook, Wethersfield, Willington, Winchester, Windham, Wolcott, and Woodbury.
