Cuyo’s Summer Program

Founded in 2020, the Cuyo Summer Social Justice Youth Program is a six week program for BIPOC youth in low-income communities and households who engage in workshops centered around Afro-Taino and Afro-Indigenous art and cultural practices. Youth ages 5-15 from Waterbury and surrounding communities participate in Cuyo at the heart of downtown Waterbury. At the Afro-Caribbean Cultural Center the camp runs on a satellite campus style, meaning the center functions as a central homebase for the camp, but youth frequently utilize other local spaces such as the Silas Bronson Library, the North End Recreation Center, etc.

Youth participate in a multitude of art and cultural workshops throughout the camp experience. They also will have a few outside organizations/ community leaders speak to the youth about various social issues such as mental health, financial literacy, cyberbullying, and much more. Each summer the camp has an Issue of Importance where they work with community leaders and organizations to create a grassroots community engagement event.
