Title: Community Services Intern
Location: New Britain
Dates: 5/26 - 8/28 with some flexibility
Hours: TBD - Scheduling to be determined between the supervisors of QPC/SCY programs and the student intern.

Job Description: 

The Community Services Intern will primarily work within the Quality Parenting Cetner (QPC) and with the Sreening CT'S Youth Program (SCY). Our Quality Parenting Center (QPC) provides opportunities for parents to have supervised family time with their children, learn and practice new parenting skills, repair family relationships, and improve the quality of the parent-child interaction. The SCY Program was developed to screen children and adolescents throughout Connecticut for early detection of mental health and trauma issues and, if needed, refer them to behavioral health services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Attends all program and skill development training courses/webinars and meetings assigned or approved by Program Supervisor.
  • Supervise visits between children and their biological parents at the Quality Parenting Center (QPC)
  • Provide support to parents that includes establishing a trusting relationship with the parent(s) and child(ren)
  • Complete all tasks assigned on time, including but not limited to observation notes, treatment plans, treatment reviews, NCFAS-G- Pre, NCFAS-G Post, and discharge summaries.
  • Provide documentation to the QPC Program Supervisor or Coordinator for court as requested.
  • Provide coverage for a supervised visit if a family visitation worker is out ill or on vacation
  • Assist with Screening CT's Youth Program (SCY). Conducts community outreach events and community collaborations to assist with managing needs of the families.
  • Consults with SCY Program Supervisor for crisis intervention efforts for clients and assists with Community Health Worker (CHW) referrals to community-based for the families.
  • Conducts client screening and access to behavioral health resources utilizing critical thinking skills and knowledge of area resources.

A successful intern will gain and use knowledge of comprehensive community and state services available within the region that provide behavioral health services and support to overcome barriers to mental health services for families of various cultural and economic backgrounds. They will need to demonstrate professional, courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with clients.

Career Experience: 

The Intern will gain the following skills: outreach, advocacy, and barrier intervention for families, how to gain access to community-based supports and behavioral health treatment resources, and case management skills, working with diverse clients.

Suggested College Major: 

Experience in human services, family dynamics, child development, strength based philosophy; good verbal/written skills, maturity, self-awareness, ability to function independently, ability to work with diverse populations through cultural humility.

Applicant Requirements: 

Relevant course work/study in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or other similar field of study.
