Title: Community Development & Marketing Intern
Location: Waterbury
Dates: May/June - August, 9 weeks
Hours: The intern will have an established 7 hour work day to be determined with half hour lunch estimated at 9 weeks (315 hours). Some flexibility may be required due to timing of some special events.

Job Description:

To assist YMCA membership, marketing and development staff in planning, managing and implementing fundraising, marketing and membership retention and operations. Special Events during internship include: YMCA Annual Meeting, Campership Program, Golf Tournament, Race4Chase Triathlon Finale, Kids Marathon, and the Griskus Sprint & Olympic.

General Responsibilities include: 

  • Maintaining and developing YMCA image database 
  • Assisting with membership and development mailings
  • Collecting imagery for YMCA storytelling strategies that correlate with member stories
  • Interviewing selected members and participants identified through social media interactions for impact stories
  • Auditing the website and identifying updates needed
  • Taking minutes at Membership staff meetings
  • Capturing impact at YMCA special events through photos and interviews
  • Assist with social media outreach/improvements
  • Update flyers and marketing collateral as needed/based on skill level
  • Work on a proposal for long-term interior and exterior signage improvement w/ budget
  • Writing impact press releases for YMCA and special events

Special Events Responsibilities include:

  • Creating informational packets for event participants (will involve research & writing)
  • Event execution and active on-site participation: checking in and registering participants, providing an overall first-class experience for participants
  • Meeting with venues, sponsors, and other parties to plan events, setting up prior to events, and reviewing and debriefing following the event
  • Managing and monitoring social media for events and groups, assisting with additional marketing initiatives to supporters, participants, media and the public
  • Responding to inquiries regarding events, before and after
  • Assisting with donor solicitation requests to expand and strengthen cultivation programs
  • Develop and maintain relationships with prospective participants, donors, and sponsors
  • Assist with data entry, registration administration, and acknowledgements utilizing information technology systems to support development and administration efforts (including Excel, Outlook, Constant Contact, Jonas Fitness, Daxko and others)
  • Production of quantitative and qualitative reports to support further development of events in future
  • General clerical and administrative duties to include but not limited to: photocopying, faxing, filing, and record keeping

Career Experience: 

This internship is ideal for an individual who enjoys working in a fast paced, active environment, in a variety of settings (including outdoors), with many different types of people, interacting between multiple departments with a variety of staff.  Each day may look different than the day before.  This internship will provide first-hand experience in non-profit operations and event management.  Student will network and learn to communicate within a diverse variety of departments, fields, and populations.

Applicant Requirements: 

Intern will need to provide own transportation to off-site events, or be willing to carpool with other YMCA staff.
