New Britain Museum of American Art

Title: Education Intern
Location: New Britain
Dates: June 1 - August 16
Hours: 35 hours/week for 9 weeks with some flexibility. Availability on one Saturday per month required.

Job Description: 

The internship will offer a student the opportunity to gain practical experience in a museum environment and to assist with a variety of programmatic, research, content creation, and marketing strategies. The role of the Education Intern is to support the planning, implementation, and promotion of educational programming and digital content. This intern will work within the Learning & Engagement Department under the direction of the Senior Manager of Community Engagement and Family Programs and the Manager of Art Studio Education. They will also work closely with other Department staff and interns in other museum departments.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

On-site Children’s Programs:

  • Assist Education staff in leading summer youth programming
  • Help design and record dynamic digital content related to the Museum’s permanent collection and programming for publication on the NBMAA’s webpage and social media accounts
  • Help plan and execute programs and interdisciplinary experiences for community and family audiences, especially the monthly Access For All Community Days.

Community Outreach & Partnership Initiatives

  • Maintain the database of current digital content and lessons; strategize ways to distribute digital content to community partners
  • Assist with marketing initiatives, including mailings and distribution in the community 
  • Support community outreach efforts with other New Britain service organizations; maintain database of community partners; strategize partnerships with other organizations to reach New Britain residents
  • Accompany staff during outreach programs and events in the community
  • Prepare educational activities and marketing materials for community programs and events
  • Assist in building community email list for flyer and marketing distribution
  • Develop Self-Guided Family Activities for Museum Maker Space
  • Work closely with Learning & Engagement staff to create self-guided and take-and-make activities for children and families that relate to the permanent collection and special exhibitions; document use of in-gallery activities for Museum archives
  • Photograph and record social media content to promote take-and-make activities across Museum’s platforms
  • Document and save in-gallery activities to the Education Department’s Google Suite drive to establish and maintain archives

Career Experience: 

This internship offers valuable museum ed. experience, linking theory and practice while exploring museums' cultural role. Students develop research, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Suggested College Majors:

The intern should have an appreciation or interest in education and/or marketing, art, and museums Suggested majors may include: Museum Studies, Art Education, Education, Art History, Studio Arts, Arts Administration, or Marketing/Communications.

Applicant Requirements: 

Candidates should have experience with children, enthusiasm and strong community skills.

Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite is required.

Experience with digital design software is a plus. Spanish/Arabic proficiency preferred.
