Emeritus Members Honor the Legacy of the Founding Board

The American Savings Foundation board of directors elected Marie S. Gustin and Harry N. Mazadoorian as emeritus board members, honoring and thanking them for their tremendous dedication and leadership throughout the Foundation’s 25 year history.

Attorney Harry N. Mazadoorian and Dr. Marie S. Gustin both served as board members of the former American Savings Bank when the idea for the Foundation first emerged. They and the other founding board members led the way for the American Savings Foundation to become the first bank foundation established in the state of Connecticut, and just the third in the nation.

Their continued voices as long-time New Britain-area residents helped inform the Foundation’s mission and vision as it evolved to play a leadership role in many efforts and initiatives in the city. Many of the investments during their leadership, including the American Savings Foundation Chair in Banking and Finance at CCSU and the American Savings Foundation Art and Education studios at the New Britain Museum of American Art, will continue to serve the community for generations.

During their tenure, the Foundation has awarded more than $64 million in the communities it serves. Dr. Gustin and Attorney Mazadoorian helped lead the Foundation through four strategic plans, and were instrumental in the Foundation’s first signature initiative - its focus on after school programs for middle school youth - which continues to be an important area of focus for the Foundation today. Both are also dedicated to advancing education through the Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Program at the American Savings Foundation, which has awarded over $13.4 million in college scholarships over the past 25 years.
