Calculating GPA - FOR REFERENCE ONLY

This form is not required. Your guidance counselor should fill in the Academic Profile page of the application (available after January 15, 2004) and sign it.

American Savings Foundation considers GPA on an unweighted 4.0 scale. To be considered for a scholarship, applicants should have a minimum 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. However, area high schools use a variety of systems for calculating GPA. If you are not sure if you have a 2.5 GPA, you can estimate your GPA by using this formula. As a guideline, a 2.5 GPA is between a C+ and B- average.

Some high schools may assign a course 3 credits, others 10. Whatever number of credits your school assigns, the formula is the same. For each letter grade, add up the total number of credits you've received. Multiply the credits for that course by the value for that letter grade on the below scale. Courses that have been awarded a "P" or "Pass", or other ungraded courses, should not be included.

Then DIVIDE the Total Grade Points by the Total Number of Credits. This gives your GPA on an unweighted 4.0 scale. For this calculation, the course level (honors, college prep, ESL, general, etc.) does not matter. The committee will look at individual coursework separately.
